The purpose of this study was to examine to what extent students with visual impairment used the Internet and were addicted to that in a bid to provide preventive education for those students to stay away from Internet addiction. And it``s also meant to lay the foundation for offering sound IT education. The findings of the study were as follows; First, regarding the use of the net among visually impaired students by school grade, sex, visual acuity and residential type, the boy students spent more mean daily time on the net than the girls did, and as for experience of accessing the Internet, those who were in the upper grades, who were boys and who had a low vision had more experience than those who were in the lower grades, who were girls and who were totally blind. Concerning what they used the net for, having a chat was most common, followed by searching information and data, playing gamesand sending e-mail. As to the time of logging on to that, they were on the Internet mainly during the day or in the evening. As for the place, they logged onto it mostly at school or home. In regard to the attitude of their parents toward their excessive use of the Internet, their parents let them access it at a fixed time or after they finished what they had to do. Concerning the reason why they controlled themselves not to be overly exposed to the net, a lot of the students did that not to be scolded by their parents or to concentrate their attention on studies. Second, the collective average of the visually impaired students in Internet addiction was 44.93. There was no intergroup gap triggered by school grade and visual acuity, but the Internet addiction of the groups was different according to their sex and residential type. 55.2% weren``t hooked on the net, and 36.8% were at risk, and 8.0% were addicts. Their school grade made no differences to their addiction, but their Internet addiction was different according to their sex, visual acuity and residential type.

Language development has become increasingly recognized as an important concerns in the special education. It is easy to agree that the sequence of language development during the first five years of life is important. However, most children with disabilities who are attending the elementary levels indicated developmental direction and speed, even though the children delay in developmental speed with the ordinary children. Also most materials to teach language for the children with disabilities is selected in the level of general education. The purpose of this study was to analyze the mind map vocabulary from general children how to teach the meaning vocabulary for children with disabilities. Total of 80 general children, 20 four-years, 20 five-years, and six-years, and seven-years participated for this study. Twenty vocabularies selected as target words from Korean Standard Receptive Vocabulary Test and teachers of general preschool and elementary schools. The results were that (a) age development was related with vocabulary development; (b) five years children showed the highest development than those of the other age group children in first-concept vocabulary; (c) six years children showed the highest development rather than those of the other age group children in second-concept and meaning vocabularies; and (d) the second language is developed from six years. This study suggested that the importance of teaching meaning vocabularies is emphasized in language instruction for children with disabilities. Also this study suggested how to develop the meaning vocabulary teaching programs for the children with disabilities.

The purpose of this study was to examine how teachers at special schools for thementally retarded perceived the importance of teacher performance for transition education and to what extent they could actually provide it in a bid to identify what problems transition education was confronted with. The subjects of this study selected 130 teachers who are in charge of middle school students, high school students and posthigh class at special schools for the mentally retarded in Gyeongsang province and Daegu. The questionnaires used in earlier studies to find out what qualifications teachers in charge of transition education should have were rearranged through the advice of this researcher``s main professor to suit the purpose of the study, and Likert scale was employed. After a survey was conducted, statistical data on frequency and mean were obtained to see how they looked at the importance of teacher performance for transition education and to what extent they actually offered it. In addition, t-test and F-test were implemented. The findings of the study were as follows; First, the teachers investigated were well cognizant of the importance of teacher performance for transition education, and this fact suggested that transition education should be conducted in a systematic way. Second, in spite of their perception of the importance of teacher performance for transition education, their actual performance of it lagged behind in large part. To make transition education successful, it``s urgently required to improve their competency for transition education.

In this research, we conducted literature review to identify current research andapplications in the area of functional assessment-based behavior support approaches for young children with disabilities who demonstrate problems and to suggest future directions for early intervention practices. The literature review revealed that effective behavioral intervention practices use functional assessment-based approach to understanding and intervening in a child``s problem behavior. The positive behavior supports emphasize multi-element-based intervention that addresses function of problem behavior, environmental modification, prevention of problem behavior, replacement behavior instruction, response to problem behavior in ways that reduce the effectiveness of that behavior, and lifestyle-based intervention. The current approaches for young children with special needs focus on ecological approaches that are important to provide comprehensive services to children and their families. The development of family-professional partnership is emphasized in the process of functional assessment and in the development and implementation of behavior support plans. It was also found that supporting children who are at-risk for behavior disorders to prevent future problems is emphasized. This study suggests that the central government and local education agency should expend roles and functions of individualized education program team, develope community-based service system, early identification and intervention services for at-risk children, development and implementation of family and teacher support programs so that families and professionals jointly develop and implement positive behavior support programs.

The purpose of this research was to conduct item validity analysis of a motor area of developmental screening inventory assessing developmental state of preschoolers. Explorations of item analysis (item difficulty and discrimination) and item internal consistency yielded evidence of content validity. The motor ability of the infants until 35 months increased gradually, and 54 month afters it appeared with the fact that the motor ability maintains a stable level. Each item also reflected an age change appropriately. Against the result regarding gender difference was discussed.

The purpose of this study was to find out effect of activities based number conceptual practice by the concrete teaching materials on development of numerical concept MA 7～8 children with cerebral palsy. The practice used in this study was a reorganized programmed which based on Soh-young Park(2005), Fujihara(2002), Nakasawa(1998), Payne & Huinker(1993), Jung-Suk Lee(1987)`s training of numerical concept that was applied to conceptual development of number of MA 7～8 children. The version of practice in this study was reorganized and programmed by this researcher to fit the children with cerebral palsy, MA 7～8. The subjects in this study were 54 children with cerebral palsy who were MA 7～8. They were divided into 2 groups; treatment and control. Each group was composed of 27 children who were randomly selected. Before treatment of the study, all groups were tested on K-WISC-Ⅲ and Conceptual of Number Test. The period of treatment was 8 weeks and each group was given to their practice methods 12 times. And after treatment of the study, two groups were given to post-test by Conceptual of Number Test. Data obtained from these tests were analyzed by t-test. This major findings of this study were as follow: First, the activities based number conceptual practice by the concrete teaching materials had an effect on conceptual development of cardinal number of the children with cerebral palsy. Second, also the activities based number conceptual practice by the concrete teaching materials had an effect on conceptual development of 1:1 matching principle of the children with cerebral palsy. Last, the activities based number conceptual practice by the concrete teaching materials had an effect on conceptual development of ordinal number of the children with cerebral palsy.

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of cognitive-metacognitive strategy instruction on mathematical word problem solving ability, duration of problem solving, number of problems completed correctly per minute, and self-efficacy of children with learning disabilities. The subjects were 3 children with learning disabilities of 3rd and 4th grade inelementary school. A multiple baseline design across subjects was used. The data of dependent variables were reviewed by baseline, intervention, and maintenance phases, while self-efficacy was analyzed by comparing the difference between preand post-test. The results of the research were as follows: (1) Cognitive-metacognitive strategy instruction enhanced the mathematical word problem solving ability of children with learning disabilities. (2) Cognitive-metacognitive strategy instruction impacted on the duration of problem solving of children with learning disabilities. (3) Cognitive-metacognitive strategy instruction enhanced the number of problems completed correctly per minute. (4) Enhanced mathematical word problem solving ability by the cognitive-metacognitive strategy instruction also induced the enhancement of self-efficacy of children with learning disabilities. These findings show that cognitive-metacognitive strategy instruction can be an efficient method for children with learning disabilities who have a negative attitude and insufficient ability to methematical word problems. Some suggestions for future research were provided.

The purpose of this study was to grasp the realities of parents`` participation and roles in special class students`` education and to present improvement method. For this study, 131 special class teachers of elementary school in Busan were employed and researched by questionnaire. The realities of parents`` participation and roles in special class students`` education were as follows. First, the parents`` participation and roles were high in diagnosis and evaluation referral but were low in diagnosis and evaluation practice. Second, the parents`` participation and roles were low in individualized educational program planning, execution, evaluation and adjustment. Third, the parents`` participation and roles were low in special class operation and parents training was not enough. This findings implies that parents`` participation and roles are guaranteed and systematic parents participation program are developed for effective special class students education.

This study was to evaluate the adaption of the national common basic curriculum in the 7th special school curriculum and the presence of its restructuring. The survey was performed to 200 teachers in the special schools and special classrooms. The result of this study showed that teachers has difficulties in teaching subject matters because they have in general much more contents to teach which were in high difficulty level and their students have serious individual difference in their abilities, even though there are somewhat difference in every subject matter. The requisite conditions for individual lesson were found to be a qualified teaching-learning assisted materials and provision of various textbooks suited for the students`` abilities. The special school teachers had the necessity to restructure the curriculum and managed the lesson with the restructured curriculum suited for the characteristics of schools and students. The restructuring methods mainly used was the summarization of the contents. The suggestions based on the result of the study were made, that the content amount of each subject matter and its difficulty level should be properly adjusted to lessen the students`` loads in the revision of the next curriculum, that the characteristics of each disability category should be reflected as each subject matter is selected and learning activities are organized, and that it should be provided qualified teaching-learning aids and various textbooks restructured properly to be fit for each student``s ability.

The arms of the present study were (1) to investigate the social interaction between children and a child with Attention Deficit Disorder in a regular class by observing their behavior during a recess four times a year, and (2) to assess the inter-observer reliability of a new method to observe children``s behavior using a hand-held computer. The behavior observation with a hand-held computer had some advantages of measuring behavior; easy to code a frequency, duration, and interval of specific behaviors and to directly analyze the data. The participants were 3 typical-children and a child with Attention Deficit Disorder, and they were the third graders of elementary school in Sendai city in Japan. The inter-observer reliability with use of a hand-held computer was acceptable(κ =.71 for initiated behavior and κ=.66 for reactive behavior). The results obtained were as follows; 1) child with disabilities had difficulties in initiating and maintaining the interaction with nondisabled peers; 2) typical-children showed self-initiated behaviors more frequently as compared with child with disabilities; 3) such a result with the social interaction between children and child with disabilities didn``t change even if time passes.

The purpose of this study was to find out the factors affecting on the life of hearing impaired young adults and to establish the strategies to support them in their home and school life. We compared hearing impaired young adults to normals with regard to the degree of depression. We examined 34 hearing impaired men and 27 women aged from 13to 17, and 30 normal men and 29 women at the same ages. All the tests were based on CDI and t-test was performed to identify the differences between test groups. The results were followings Hearing impaired young adults showed higher degree of depression than normals significantly. Women had got depression higher than men. The hearing impaired without hearing aids showed higher degree of depression than those with hearing aids.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the fundamental information for the present status on the use of the wheelchairs. For this study, some types of questionnaires are given to 300 wheelchair users. As a result of this research we can know following: Wheelchair postural management is assumed to be a valid and necessary strategy in the care of individuals with wheelchair users. A properly prescribed wheelchair may be able to normalize tone, decrease pathologic reflex activity, improve postural symmetry, enhance range of motion, increase comfort and sitting tolerance, decrease fatigue, and improve function of the nervous system. Also, the optimal seating position and seating system in wheelchair ought to provide postural control and pressure relief. Therefore, identifying the optimal control system requires multiple evaluations by a wheelchair therapists.

This study was carried out for the purpose of finding out the feeling of their satisfaction actual condition of sign language interpreters. For this, I investigated 252 sign language interpreters licensed from 2001 to 2003 through an e-mail and mail survey and then I chose 90 answers to make a statistical analysis. The results of this research were as follows: A feeling of satisfaction of the interpreters licensed in the last three years ran as follows. Most of them answering these questions were satisfied below the average. but the full time interpreters and the interpreters attended actively supplementary instruction to improve their natural dispositions as a sign language interpreter and skills had highly a feeling of satisfaction. The average length of activity was about two to four years because there were many interpreters only for voluntary service. Since about a half of them hold two offices at the same time, they acted as a service to the public, and were restricted by time in many cases. Most of gatherings in local area did not practice, because there were not programs and public information. The rest of the meetings were for cultivating mutual friendship. A number of interpreters attended actively supplementary instruction to improve their natural dispositions as a sign language interpreter and skills to be an expert. It, however, was pointed out that they needed much cost and were not trained enough in professional skills. To make better this conditions, we should change the weak curriculum into the one related practical life and ensure an occupational stability and systematic educational system in order to activate interpreter``s activity. The interpreting center should offer much information for the deaf and dumb. Since I made only licensed interpreters an object of this research and the rate of withdrawing was low, it was not enough to generalize the results.

This study is to examine how Diary Education Program using the Braille Display affected blind children``s writing skills and their attitudes toward writing. The objectives of this study are as follows:First, to examine the effects of Diary Education Program using the BrailleDisplay on the writing length and accuracy of blind children. Second, to examine the effects of Diary Education Program using the Braille Display on the quality of writing of blind children. Third, to examine the effects of Diary Education Program using the Braille Display on blind children``s attitudes toward writing. In order to conduct it 3 blind children(1 girl and 2 boys) from the 4th grade of "C" School for the Blind were selected as the subject for this study. The experiment covered the period from April 12, 2004 to September 16, 2004. Before taking Diary Education Program using the Braille Display, blind children took the pretest. Then, over two weeks, they were taught how to use the Braille Display. In preparation, the children were trained 20 times using the braille display for word processing before being assessed. After blind children became familiar with the device, blind children started "training" of Diary Education Program using the Braille Display for 20 sessions. After blind children finished the training, they were tested in the 2nd week. They were tested yet again in the 5th week and 8th week to see if their results were maintained. By using the results of the tests, (before and after blind children took the Education Program) the length, accuracy, and quality of the writing and children``s attitudes toward writing were analyzed. The writing length was measured by the quantity of words and sentences, the writing accuracy by the orthography and the accuracy of word spacing and writing quality by an evaluation checklist. The children were asked to fill out a survey to find out their attitudes toward writing. They were asked questions about their writing related to cognitive, response and process The results of this study are summarized as follows: First, Diary Education Program using the Braille Display improved the length and accuracy of blind children``s writing.Second, Diary Education Program using the Braille Display improved the quality in writing content, organization and quality of expression of blind children``s writing. Third, Diary Education Program using the Braille Display improved blind children``s cognitive appreciation about writing, their emotional responses toward writing and children``s attitude toward writing process, thus changing blind children``s writing attitude very positively. This study showed that Diary Education Program using the Braille Display was effective in improving the writing skills of blind children and changing their attitudes toward writing positively. A formal evaluation system based on the above results should be designed to accurately conduct research about children being trained in writing and Diary Education Program using the Braille Display.

The purpose of this study was to determine the beginning year of special education in three ways. Firstly, when was the Pyengyang School for the Blind and Deaf established? Secondly, did Dr. Rosetta Hall teach the New York Point to Pongnai in Pyengyang in 1894? Thirdly, how was the situation of Pyengyang in May of 1894 to establish the school? The articles written by Dr. Hall and her friends(missionaries) and formal documents published by Chosun Government were collected and analyzed to determine the beginning year of special education in Korea in this study. As the result of the first goal, Dr. Hall wrote three times that she began teaching the blind 1898, Mrs. Noble and Dr. Underwood wrote that Dr. Hall established the school for the blind in 1898, and a couple of teachers of the school for the blind said that it was set up in 1898. In some documents published by Chosun Government the Pyengyang School for the Blind was established in 1898. As the second result, Dr. Hall pricked Korean oiled paper with a needle. This meant that she didn``t use braille slate and stylus. Without using them she couldn``t make the correct braille copy and without it she couldn``t teach braille to Pongnai. As the third result, while Dr. Hall was in Pyengyang in 1894, her circumstances were not good to begin teaching the blind. When she arrived in Pyengyang, the governor of Pyengyang refused her stay in Pyengyang and required to leave Pyengyang. As she did not leave Pyengyang, the governor of Pyengyang arrested her Korean colleagues and put them into jail. The British consul ordered that she would leave Pyengyang with her son. And she worked and took care of patients at the hospital while she suffered from stomach diseases. Finally she agreed to leave Pyengyang in May 23rd in 1894. At that time it was not a good situation for her to begin teaching the blind in such a difficult period of time in Pyengyang in 1894. Therefore, the beginning year of special education in Korea is not 1894 but it is 1898.

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of functional assessment-based intervention on problem behaviors of one elementary school student with autism. This study included two experimental phases. During Phase 1, functional assessment was conducted to develop and test hypotheses about possible relationships between environmental variables and problem behaviors. During Phase 2, functional assessment-based intervention was developed and implemented. An alternating treatments design and an A-B design were used for functional analysis and intervention. Based on the results of the functional analysis, the teaching assistant gave the participant appropriate tasks and the next task as soon as the previous task was completed. This multicomponent intervention, specifically, instructional modifications, immediately decreased problem behaviors. Such changes were generalized to the special education teacher and maintained after the intervention was discontinued. Intervention fidelity data indicated that the teaching assistant could conduct intervention with limited training. Finally, intervention acceptability data demonstrated that the teaching staff strongly accepted functional assessment-based intervention.

The purpose of this study was to examine the characteristics of semantic change, the predicatively idiomatic expressions, and the idiomatic expressions, in analyzing the existing materials related to the idiomatic expressions of sign language, which are routinely being available in our country``s deaf society, in arranging its concepts, and in considering the linguistic characteristics and types. The main results of this study, which came to be obtained through the above materials, are as follows. First, differently from Korean language, in Korean sign language, one word brings about the phoneme in sign language such as tabulator, signation, and designator, namely, a change in the form of a word, or causes a change in the meaning by using the non-manual sign, and the language masses in deaf people use this, thus it was represented much in a case that comes to have the idiomatic meaning. Second, even the idiomatic expressions in Korean sign language, comprise more than two words like general language, and there are many cases to create the 3rd meaning from the meaning in each of words. And, it could be confirmed through various materials that it is widely being used freely by the language masses in deafpeople.

Braille has served a significant role for persons with visual impairments as a means of literacy and as a symbol of independence. Among numerous studies with regards to braille, the early use of contracted and uncontracted braille has recently drawn attention from the professionals. However, such attention is not new. This article reexamines the debate from the 1940s and 1950s regarding this topic and proposes a framework for discussion and future research studies. By reviewing existing literature, the derivation of the debate, perspectives of the promoters of the early use of contracted braille, and the subcatagorical issues related to the use of uncontracted and contracted braille are discussed. In addition, the possible advantages of the early use of uncontracted braille along with the changes of the population and environmental factors are conferred. A framework for future studies and focus of discussion on this topic are suggested.

The purpose of this study is to analyze the relationship between discrimination of general hiring requirements and factor of employment decisions in hiring an employee with a disability in respect of social role valorization theory and to suggest effective ways for supporting integrated life of people with disabilities.Completed company questionnaires were received from 62 companies in Daegu and Gyeongbuk province whose number of employees was more than 300. This was a respond rate of 50%. The result of this study can be summarized as follows: 1. There was discrimination of general hiring requirements of companies betweenpeople with disabilities and people without disabilities. 2. Companies placed greater importance on factor related work performance than factors related social responsibility or interpersonal relations. 3. Factor related work performance had negative influence on the percentage of employees with disabilities. 4. This appearance infers negative attitude and awareness of companies toward people with disabilities from the social role valorization theory. Therefore, to improve this appearance, we should strengthen the social image improvement program and research and prescribe absolutely the procedures of proof and investigation of discrimination related work performance when legislating anti-discrimination act.

We investigated the relationship between cognitive processes when tested with Cognitive Assessment System developed by Das and Naglieri(1997) based on thePASS(Planning, Attention, Simultaneous, Successive) theory of intelligence and the reading skills of children with and without reading disabilities. 54 children with reading disabilities and normally achieving children between 8 years and 10years of age were divided into 4 groups according to their grade. All children were administered measures of attention, simultaneous and successive processes. Results confirmed the findings of previous studies of a deficit in cognitive processes in children with reading disabilities. Deficit in successive process contributed independent variation to word recognition while deficit in simultaneous process contributed independent variation to reading comprehension.
