The purpose of this study is to compare the performance of mathematical word problem solving and solving process of children at grades 4 ~ 6 with mathematics disability with(MD + RD) and without comorbid reading disabilities (MD). Total of 26 students completed 4 types word problem (general word problem, longer word problem with a long sentence, word problem with changed order of data presentation and operation, word problem with irrelevant information) and responded regarding to the process of word problem with 4 Steps(understanding, planning carrying out, looking back). The results are below. First, there were significant differences on the performance of general word problem, longer word problem with a long sentence, and word problem with irrelevant information between children with MD + RD and MD only. However, no significant group difference was found on the performance of word problem with changed order of data presentation and operation. Second, there were significant difference for the process of solving word problem with 4 steps between children with MD + RD and MD only. Implication and recommendation for the instruction and study based on the results were suggested.

The purpose of this study was to analyze the experimental studies for children with autism based on quality indicators published between 1997 and March of 2010. Nine single subject design studies were published in major special education journals. To examine characteristics of the studies, we used 12 analytic variables such as participants, research setting, research design, intervention, target behavior, research procedure, measurement method, interrater reliability, social validity, treatment fidelity, result, and maintenance and generalization. We also used 7 quality indicators for single subject design studies such as description of participants and settings, dependent variable, independent variable, baseline, experimental control/internal validity, external validity, and social validity to evaluate evidence base of the studies. The results of this study indicated that studies on positive behavior support for children with autism have been conducted home setting as well as school setting. Also intervention setting, independent and dependent variables, and experimental control were not described in detail. Discussion and implications for future research were provided.

All the people have need of a residence that are independent life and self-support life. This is the same value to peoples with disabilities. In this means, Western Europe and the USA have begun Deinstitutionalization movement in order to make efforts prepare the residence in a local community for peoples with disabilities who had been separated in community region since end of 1950. This movement has influenced to the increasing of large residential institutions for people with disabilities and direction of residential Environment Support in Korea. In korea, actually, exists 347 residential institutions where live 22,250 peoples with disabilities. But these data are applicable to peoples with disabilities in residential institutions about 1.0% the ratio of total registered peoples with disabilities. In fact, it is not the residential institutions enough to support of independent life for peoples with disabilities. And There were problems regarding poor residential environment and treatment, and the inhuman life-situations of those above disabilities in residential institutions. But it has no guarantee in a person’s living to one’s rights, self-decision making, independent life, the unrestrictedly life and the mutual communication with society and so on, for peoples with disabilities who live in residential institutions. And these are hindrances to quality of life for peoples with disabilities under consideration of their rights to independent life, self-decision and so on. This study bring up the strategies of residential environment support for improving quality of life for peoples with disabilities that are based on a development-background and problems of residential Institutions, and a search for quality of life for peoples with disabilities. The directions of life residential environment support for improving quality of life for peoples with disabilities are as follows; First, support of small residential Institutions for peoples with disabilities and their quality administration. Second, opening residential institutions for peoples with disabilities to community. Third, making a opportunity to productive activities for peoples with disabilities. Forth, Supplement Security Income support for peoples with disabilities after Deinstitutionalization. Fifth. professional competence and understanding and recognition on peoples with disabilities of staff members that work in residential Institutions for peoples with disabilities Finally, guarantee of human rights on peoples with disabilities So, it is necessary the social recognition and the efforts to be in one line of home residence environment for deinstitutionalization and social inclusion which guarantees the quality of life and defends human rights of peoples with disabilities.

The purpose of the study is to develop leisure activity programs to improve the ego-identity and self-esteem of students with intellectual disabilities who attend special education schools and to find out the effects of the programs on ego-identity and self-esteem of students with intellectual disabilities. The objects of the study are 20 high school students with intellectual disabilities who attend H special school and have from moderate to mild mental retardation. The study results are as follows. First, the degree of change of ego-identity of experimental group which participated in leisure activity program is significantly improved compared to that of control group. Looking at sub-areas, in every 6 areas(independence, self-receptiveness, firm future goals, goal-orientation, intimacy), experimental group shows significant improvement than control group. Second, the degree of change of self-esteem of experimental group which participated in leisure activity program is significantly improved compared to that of control group. Looking at sub-areas, in 3 areas(comprehensive self-esteem, social self-esteem, home self-esteem) among 4 areas, experimental group shows significant improvement than control group. However, there is no significant difference in school self-esteem. In conclusion, the study results indicate that leisure activity programs developed in the study have positive effects on the ego-identity and self-esteem of students with intellectual disabilities.

The purpose of this study was to know current status of special school curriculum development and organizationㆍmanagement according to “revision of special school curriculum in 2008”. For this study, 44 special schools across 5 disability areas were employed and researched by questionnaire. The results of this study were as follows. First, special school curriculum was developed by research division and curriculum division of school, but outside curriculum professionals and community personnel were not participated in curriculum development. When schools restructure subjects curriculum, they revised curriculum contents based on students’ disabilities characters. Second, concerning curriculum organizationㆍmanagement, many schools selected national common basic curriculum or basic curriculum without disability area of school, and some schools managed combined curriculum. Most schools ware managing therapy support activities 2 hours in a week availing discretion activity time and after school time. Based on this results, discussion and some suggestions were provided for better implementation of special school curriculum.

The study analyzed the variables related to the parenting stress of the grandparents who caregive their grandchildren with severe disabilities. The study also considered the ways of increasing positive adaptation as well as decreasing the parenting stress. The study included 82 grandparents who are caregiving their grandchildren with severe disabilities for a part-time or full-time. The grandparent participants responded on the Korean translation of the Parenting Stress Index/Short Form (PSI/SF). As the results, the study revealed the marriage status, educational level, distance from their grandchild, and caregiving time as the variables related to grandparents’ demographic characteristics. As well, the variables related to the grandchildren included a placement of school, a severity of disability, and a way of communication. Based on the results of the study, the study suggested psychological support for the grandparents, provision of information regarding their grandchild’s disability, increase of the respite program, extension of the inclusive education, and enlargement of the augmentative and alternative communication to decrease grandparents’ parenting stress and increase their positive adaptation.

The purpose of this study was to develop a Sibling Program for siblings of children with disabilities which was based affirmative characters and investigate the effect of the program on the coping/adjustment abilities of siblings of children with disabilities. The variables of program were divided into inter-personal and intra-personal characters. The inter-personal characters were maturation and endear, self-esteem and the intra-personal characters were networks to support family and fellowship which felt at same situation. The coping/adjustment abilities were composed six sub- categories, which were competence/knowing, burden, friend-school, anger, psychological health, and future copingㆍadjustment. The Scale of this study was Coping/Adjustment Scale for Children of Siblings with Disabilities developed by Perry(1989). The statical method, t test were used to find difference of control group and experimental group. A pre-post test controlled group design was used in this study through 38 children at elementary school. The conclusion of this study was to present meaningful difference between controlled group and experimental group on copingㆍadjustment, specially, anger and psychological health. But two sub-categories, which were burden, future copingㆍadjustment didn’t make remarkable improvement. For future studies, the limits and the directions were discussed on the current study.

The purpose of this study was to review the recent research trend regarding children with specific language impairment. We reviewed the articles published from 1989 to 2009 in the international and Korean journals that focus on speech-language pathology and special education. A total of 303 articles (International : Korean = 269 : 34) were selected and the following information was extracted from each articles and analyzed aspects of language, participants, research method, independent variables, dependent variables, and major results. The result which analyzes in research subject, the studies related SLI were above of 72% in grammatical (syntax & morphology), semantic, cognitive, pragmatic subject. And it was different research subject qualities between domestic research and overseas research. We discussed the results and suggested a direction for future research on language development with SLI children.

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of reading education program on the student’s empathic ability and peer receptive attitude to children with disabilities. The subjects of this study is composed of 60 students in 2 classes of the 5th grade at elementary school in Daejeon. After the pre-test has been administered, the reading education program has been treated twice a week, 12 times in total for the experimental group, but not for control group. After the program was finished, the post-test has been administered simultaneously to both groups. The results were as follows: First, the reading education program had a positive effect on the improvement of empathic ability. Second, the reading education program had a positive effect on the improvement of the peer receptive attitude to children with disabilities. In conclusion, the reading education program has the positive effect on the improvement of empathic ability and the peer receptive attitude to children with disabilities.

The purpose of this study is to find out the components of family support programs and to explore the application of family support programs for infants and toddlers with developmental delays and their families. Total 15 articles published in Korean Research Foundation related to family support needs survey were analysed for this study. Focusing on mothers of younger children with developmental delays, in-depth interviews were conducted. In-depth interview data were analyzed according to the constant comparison. The results of this study indicated six contents of family support programs; relationship, information, psycho-emotion, professionals, resources, financial support. In addition, for application of effective family support programs, the following elements should be considered; strengthening family functioning, levels and steps of family stress, approach based on life-cycles of younger children with developmental delays, community-use. identification and application of family’s resources, considerations on family needs, considerations on special situation and unique cultural background of families of children with developmental delays. The results in this study will be helpful to teachers and professionals who want to develop and implement the family support programs in real special education settings.

The purpose of this study is to investigate influence of medical field, parents’ perception and social circumstances on the parents’ choice to use cochlear implants for deaf children. A literature review was conducted, and an in-depth interview was carried out for four parents who had their children use an cochlear implants. The conclusion of this study is as follows: First, several factors strengthening of early detection and diagnosis system, application of medical insurance to the operation, argument in medical field that early operation leads to better result affected parents’ choice. Second, parents of deaf children were concerned about using a hearing aid for risk of further deteriorating hearing ability, and had negative ideas about Sign language. The parents received limited information on deaf community and Sign language. In comparison, in Japan, parents had access to a wide range of information, and increasingly more parents chose to provide bilingual language education for deaf children. Provision of diverse information helped parents’ choice and brought about changes in education for deaf children. In addition, more information should be offered on the rehabilitation process of cochlear implants, and influence of the operation on the children’s overall development in life. Information about deaf community should convey to parents of deaf children. The recent studies on bilingual language education for deaf children need to be introduced to the parents. To do so, deaf education should explore how to build a network between deaf community and parents of deaf children.

The aim of this paper is to conduct a critical review of the literature on disabled children and their families, with a focus on the parental experiences of disablement and practices associated with disabled children. Drawing in varying degrees on critical and emancipatory insights developed within disability studies, this ppaapper problematizes the limited notions of disabling conditions of parenting a disabled child and constitutes a direct challenge to the traditional and pathological a er app pproaches prevalent in the literature. This paper argues that adopting the social model of disability approaches provides several vantage points in the sense of allowing the broader range of disablement facing families with disabled children to be visible and challenging the orthodox view that the disabled child makes the family disabled. The purpose of this study is to investigate how to establish a grade- wide positive behavior support system(GWPBS) in large size schools. Three stages of GWPBS model is developed. The first stage is developing a general positive behavior support system for the entire student. Main tasks at this stage are setting up a positive behavior support team, establishing the list of behavior expectations, teaching-monitoring-reinforcing the behavior expectations, making positive and accepting grade atmosphere, and managing problem behaviors happened. The second stage is developing a positive behaviors support system for a group of students who are at risk. Main works at this stage are administering a small group behavior management program such as Check in/Check out, teaching social skills, and teaching self-management skills. The final stage is developing a positive behavior support system for the small number of students who are at high risk. Main works at this stage are administering behavior interventions based on functional behavior analysis(FBA) and teaching individualized social or self- management skills.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the career barriers of intellectual disabilities who attended general middle schools. Interviews with 10 mothers of students with intellectual disabilities were conducted in order to investigate the mothers’ experiences with their student with intellectual disabilities. Three themes emerged from qualitative analysis: (1) the impact of student’s career barriers (2) the task of empowerment for intellectual disabilities, and (3) the support needed for raising student with intellectual disabilities. Implications for policy and practices for student with intellectual disabilities was provided.

The DSM-IV-TR is the most commonly used manual in the United States to identify students with ADHD. The DSM-IV-TR used in this study contains 18 ADHD criteria for children’s problematic behaviors manifested in inattention and hyperactivity-impulsivity. Although DSM-IV-TR criteria have been used in research on ADHD with Korean school-age children, psychometric characteristics of ADHD criteria described in the DSM-IV-TR have not been examined. This missing information is imperative for quality research. In this context, factor structures of ADHD need to be explained under theoretical assumptions, and it has to be examined educational context of various national situations. Therefore the purpose of this study was to review various researches on ADHD factor structure and to identify whether the current version of the DSM-IV-TR, which consists of two dimensions of inattention and hy hypperactivity-impulsivity, was appropriate for describing the psychological and behavioral problems of ADHD children of other countries. Recently, some studies have been using confirmatory factor analysis to determine the factor structures of ADHD based on DSM versions. And the discussions and suggestions on ADHD factor structure and future studies was provided.

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of realism, color, and type of content of graphic symbols on target pointing in communication boards. For such purpose, the experiment was performed for measuring and evaluating the reaction time and accuracy of target symbol identification. 29 adults participated in the experiment. As experimental materials, 117 symbols were selected from PMLS symbols. The symbols consisted of 3 level realism(line-drawing vs. realitic vs. photographic), 2 color types(color vs. black-white), 3 types of meaning(object, action, state). The findings of this study showed that the reaction time and accuracy of colored or object symbols were significantly shorter than those of the uncolored symbols and the symbols representing action or state. The results suggested that AAC system using the colored symbols appropriately might be more effective. In final section, the guidelines for the effective AAC system design and the follow-up researches were discussed.

The purpose of this study was to survey people with disabilities living in Daegu city on their demand for Assistive Technology Service Center and to identify their primary needs. The survey had carried out from August 2009 to September 2009. And 200 had participated in survey, 113 of available data were analyzed. Through this study, the necessity of setting up an assistive technology service center which aimed at people with disabilities living in Daegu city was identified. Tasks like information provision, consultation and evaluation, manufacture and modification devices and user training should be performed by assistive technology experts and financial support from local government, public benefit, and health insurance were needed in using assistive technology. The results of this study were expected to be used as a groundwork for decision of scale, devisal of plan and management of further community-based assistive technology service center.

This study looked into the application of the program for utilizing of schedules influencing special education teachers(SETs) and special education assistants(SEAs)’ role awareness and job satisfaction regarding common activities of the teaching activity process. The objects of this study are 3 SETs and 3 SEAs. Schedules of this study consist of a total of 2 parts: one is composed of an education program with 5 sections about the roles of 3 SETs and 3 SEAs. The other is made up of a basic form and a usage method of schedules. This study was performed for 7 weeks, 5 times a week. The process of data conducted pre-post tests between two groups. The results are as follows. First, the attitudes of all SETs and SEAs about their roles and job satisfactions were changed positively after utilizing of schedules. Second, the attitudes of all SETs and SEAs about mutual roles and job performances also made affirmative change after utilizing of schedules. In particular, special education teachers(SETs) showed higher improvement in intrinsic job satisfaction while special education assistants(SEAs) in extrinsic job satisfaction.

The main purpose of this study is to conduct experimental verification for deciding core intervention elements and measuring tools in the application of Response to Intervention(RTI) for academic underachievement and learning disabilities in mathematics. For its purpose, this study measured an ability of calculation on curriculum-based measurement for 396 second-grade students, and after one year compared the score of academic achievement test in mathematics measured in the third gradearelso responser is compared with nonresponserar elso responser or nonresponser who were identified by dual-discrepancy on curriculum-based measurement is compared. The result showed that the performance level and rates of growth in ability of calculation have a high positive correlation with academic achievement in mathematics and the level of academic achievement in mathematics of children who were identified as nonresponser by dual-discrepancy among children with academic underachievement is significantly low. Based on the findings of this study, an ability of calculation as predictor variable for academic achievement in mathematics must be a core element of early intervention, and performance level and rates of growth of children must be scientifically measured according to curriculum-based measurement. It is expected that these results of study can provide lots of implications for organization and application of RTI adequate for our educational field.

The current study examined preschool teachers’ perceptions of im impplementation and competence of DEC’s child-focused recommended practices(DECRP) in their classrooms. The information was gathered through surveys of 147 teachers from pre-kindergarten programs. Overall, most respondents felt competent im lementation impplementin lementingg the child-focused practices and they believed that they frequently implemented the DECRP child-focused practices in their classrooms. A discussion of the limitations of the present study and directions for future research are suggested. Im Impplications for practice, teacher preparation programs, and practitioners also are discussed.
